TexMeX-Mas 2009 Results

Posted in Get in my belly, KC on December 8, 2009 by jdoublep

Congrats to Flyguy who, after 5 years of bringing yum and yummier chilis, won Best Meat with a Sausage and Crawdad Chili.
Preutopia’s own Sa Rah took home Best Overall and Best Veggie for her Indian Chili and Chili 2010 (Chili of the Future).
Congrats to Noah for destroying all our guts with his painful (but tasty) Noah’s Chili.
And big congrats to virgin TexMeX-mas-er Maria, who floored us all with her orgasmic Choc-amole.

Thanks to all who came out and brought delicious food for everyone to share. What started 6 years ago as a duel between Sa Rah and Dode has turned into a yearly tradition we always look forward to. We were thinking of you, Doug, with every bite of spicy goodness.

Kansas City Gardening Google Calendar

Posted in KC on October 6, 2009 by jdoublep

I’ve created a public google calendar (http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=7d4ctsjpcvq1qbbmk10sclb01o@group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/Chicago) for tracking KC Metro planting times for a number of edibles. There are still a few more plant times to add.

Harvest tracking will follow shortly as will (I hope) herb and flower details.

The dates and other info I compiled from:

Sam Adams Beer Tasting July 29th @ Barley’s in OP

Posted in Bier, KC on July 24, 2009 by jdoublep

Attention KC beer drankers:
Sam Adams tasting 7/29. Barley’s in Overland Park.
The ad I received shows Double Bock, White Ale (not a fan myself), Blackberry Witbier (also not a fan, beer review poem forthcoming), Boston Lager, and Cream Stout.
Don’t know if those are what’s in store for the tasting or not, but there you have it.
Taste hard.

No brake…no problem

Posted in Cars Are Coffins, KC on May 24, 2009 by jdoublep

When commuting to work, I ride a single-speed, single-brake, slick-tired mountain bike named Ginger. She gets me through the West Bottoms with nary a snag. (My road bike, Amelia, can barely make it to the West Bottoms with seeing a flat tire).

So Friday after work, I’m cycling home, heading north on Delaware, right after it splits from Main, just over I-70, coming down the hill into City Market when my right trigger finger gets into position to brake for the stoplight at Independence Avenue. One gentle squeeze, I’m ready for a yellow light. Another gentle squeeze, to keep my speed down – SNAP! – my brake line is gone though my trigger finger instinctively squeezes again and again to confirm pure breakage.

Act. My right foot down on the ground, hard plastic-shoe sole eaten alive by pavement. Lift. My left foot down. I’m not going to be able to stop for the intersection – come what colored light may. Quick right down, left down, can I jump off the bike if need be? Is there anyone behind me? What’s coming westbound on Independence Avenue? Anything? Can’t see…fuck it…yellow light!

And I’m through. Off the bike and onto the sidewalk. On the phone to the wife: “Sarah, my brake broke and not in the way you want your brake to break. I’m in City Market. Come in the back way. There’s a show going on tonight.”

Are there really that many people that still listen to Taking Back Sunday, The Used, or The Offspring? I’m glad none of them happened to blow through that intersection about 4:45 Friday PM.

Boulevard BBQ

Posted in Get in my belly, KC on December 29, 2008 by jdoublep

A delicious brew, richly complex in flavor and dark auburn in color. I accidentally drank the whole bottle (except for the bit that Fly Guy helped with – thanks!). Save for the cherry notes, I don’t know that I noticed much difference between the BBQ and The Sixth Glass – but I will have to do a side-by-side tasting to confirm that. Seek it out while you can – it’s a limited run like November’s Saison-Brett.

I’m resurrecting the KC Graphic Novel Club.

Here’s the related Facebook group.

Hope to see you there (unless you don’t like comics, in which case I hope you enjoy whatever else you’ve planned that night).

Did anyone else think it ironic

Posted in General, KC, Political Muck on September 6, 2008 by jdoublep

that last night, during the RNC, the title song from Footloose played?

(a song…from a film…about a town…where rock music and dancing have been banned…by a loony evangelical)

Perhaps McCain is the Bacon to Lithgowian Bush?

At any rate, now that both parties’ nominations are official – I’m ready to play political gadfly.

The story thus far:
McCain – was he playing politics from last Nov. through the convention simply to secure his party’s backing? Because he doesn’t really sound like the McCain I had grown to love over the past 10 years. (Well, the stay-in-Iraq-until-everything’s-obliterated stance I never really loved.) Nevertheless, I’ll hold out for the debates to see how far back to the center he moves.
Palin – Would you want this woman as your president should McCain’t-you-see-I’m-pretty-frackin’-old-and-might-up-and-kick-the-bucket actually up and kick the bucket? Please do tell me why you think that’s a proper move.

Obama – goodness, I want to like him – but I don’t. I think he’s a fine politician and I’ve plumbed the depths of his website to dig up actual policy – and though you wouldn’t know it by his speeches, by god, it’s there…and well-considered (visit his site, click the “Issues” link then scroll to the bottom – there’s plenty of additional, detailed, supporting documentation to the “At-a-glance” features of the website). I still don’t really like him.
Biden – rocks. I can see why some folks wondered how Barack “Uber-Agent of Change” Obama could pick a true, Washington veteren as his running mate – but it makes sense to me. It’s an expected political move to counter the “lack of experience” haters. Plus, Biden has an awesome sense of humor, which is appreciated in a person helping to run a country.

McCain attempted a similar move choosing Palin: she’s a breath of political fresh air come to liven up the GOP – but seriously, I ask you, Palin as President? So, I think that move backfired – however much it did to spark up enthusiasm at the RNC itself.

Gonna be a good, fun race. And since I don’t think McCain is the utter, worthless douche of a nutsack that is Bush, I likely won’t feel like my country stabbed itself in the eye with a salt-coated chopstick should he get elected come November. Though I do want B-Rock to school him.

The Buzz is hosting a Rock-the-Vote thingamajig this Sunday, the 7th, down in the Power & White District with a bunch of bands I’ve never heard of because I’m too busy listening to The Presets latest. Perhaps we’ll see you there.
